Palliative care

The work of the Palliative Care Unit are absolutely essential for those children and adolescents who are in the terminal phase of their illness, so that they can spend their last days at home with their families.

The aim of this group of physicians and nurses is to reduce suffering as well as improve quality of life and provide emotional support to both the patient and his family. In the case of the Palliative Care Units at Hospital Niño Jesús, their outstanding job, serving more than 150 children throughout the Community of Madrid 24 hours a day, has been recognized for "the innovation of the overall improvement of quality of care", within the first edition of The Awards for Excellece in Palliative Care in the Community of Madrid which has been given by the Health Service of Madrid (SERMs) through the Regional Coordination Office of Palliative Care.

Members of this group have teamed up to create The Association "Porque Viven", in support of pediatric palliative care developed most recently in Spain. Its founding partners are professionals, that while working in the field of pediatric palliative care, have come to realize the importance of the emerging culture of palliative care: within this association these professionals want to create a lifestyle that considers and develops pediatric palliative care, from the point of view of the integral care of the patient diagnosed with a fatal disease and that of his family, and also of information, dissemination, exchange and training of palliative care, in order to create that lifestyle.

The Aladina Foundation supports the Association "Porque Viven" contributing a significant economic amount each year to give support and continuity to the work of these professionals. We have also donated to this unit a vehicle of great dimensions especially adapted for the transport of doctors and patients in these extraordinary situations.
